Inspiring Quotes from Harry Potter

Children's literature is often full of great insight and inspiration. The writings of J. K Rowling have a great deal of emotional depth below the surface of the story of Harry Potter. Here are some of the more inspiring quotes from the series, mostly spoken by Professor Albus Dumbledore.

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone)

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)

“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

"The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed." -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” -- Sirius Black (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

"You place too much importance... on the so-called purity of blood! You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!" -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

"Harry, suffering like this proves you are still a man! This pain is part of being human … the fact that you can feel pain like this is your greatest strength." -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

"We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on." -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince)

"It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more." -- Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince)

Gosh I really admire people who can speak/read multiple languages. I've always wanted to learn a couple but never really have had the time - apart from some Russian studies (but that was related to my music). I really enjoyed reading in the original language. You are right it's really another world.

It's because I studied English and Italian language and literature at university. I've read hundreds of books in both languages, a few short works in German and a little bit in Spanish :) It really is a whole different thing to read in another language; it's like being in another world :)

Italian. Wow! I learnt a little bit of Russian and read books that were edited for students. Never got to the stage of being able to read the original works tho. I loved reading in another language. The mood is often very different from the translations. I need more time to read *sigh*

I'll take your advice :) I have a strange habit of reading a few books at the same time and finish reading the most interesting ones first. Also, I read in different languages and I'm about to start reading Umberto Eco's "The Name of The Rose" (again) in Italian. I remember that the book was full of great quotes and I've written them down, but can't find my collection book from back then. After that, I may starting reading Tolkien, and then Rowling...and then we'll see LOL

Oh definitely think about reading the books. The movies, although great, are no where near as good as the books. They had to leave so much out of the movies - like Peeves. I've only seen the movies for the Lord of the Rings, never read the books LOL

To be honest, I didn't read the books. Now that I've read these quotes, I'll seriously think about reading them. But first, I'll read The Lord of The Rings series by Tolkien. I watched the movies and absolutely loved them.

Thanks Jasmine. I love the Harry Potter series. J. K Rowling really does put some great insight into it. The quote about happiness is one of my all time faves too. Although my absolute fave has always been "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

I love this list of quotes! It was a great idea to post this "quotes article" and you've chosen excellent examples. It's hard to decide which one is my favorite, but I really like the one about happiness (#4) by Albus Dumbledore in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and the one about what's a man like (#6) by Sirius Black in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." I love and actively collect quotes so I'm saving this post. Shared, too :)
