Gothic Wedding Gowns-Brides From The Darkside

Gothic wedding gowns are nothing like the traditional wedding dresses that most people think of when a bride comes to mind. When people mention somebody's upcoming wedding, they picture a lovely, pristine white dress with touches of beautiful embellishments. The darkest shade that most people will imagine for a wedding dress is a soft antique cream color or off-white. Gothic bridal fashion is miles away from the purity that a white wedding gown symbolizes. The Goth bride wears black. Black is the staple color in Gothic fashion.

What Is Gothic Fashion?

Many people are curious to know exactly what a Goth is or what the Gothic lifestyle means. A Goth is a person who celebrates the dark period of medieval history  in ancient  Europe.  Why or how they became fascinated with this time  in history is anybody's guess. I would venture to say that Goth fashion may be a way to protest the witch hunts that were taking place in Europe at that time.

The Goths preferred method of dressing is to copy the styles from the medieval, Victorian and Elizabethan eras using dark colors like deep purple, midnight blue and black. The style of Goth is dark and morbid with very pale skin, black hair, black fingernails and sometimes even black lipstick. Even the Goth men wear pale face makeup and heavy black eyeliner with black lips.

Gothic fashion might include wearing pagan symbols or amulets as jewelry. Think Morticia Adams from The Adams Family and you can get a good idea of Goth fashion. They also enjoy giving off the appearance of  a corpse by wearing that  white face makeup.  That is why they wear it. To appear dead.  Intriguing, isn't it?

Gothic dresses can be provocative and sexy in a dark, dangerous, mysterious way. Some of them bring to mind European wenches and scullery maids wearing tight corsets, laced bodices and all kinds of Gothic cleavage showing.

Is It Bad Luck To Wear A Black Wedding Dress?

For a Goth bride, wearing white on her wedding day would not fit in with her celebration of the dark and morbid. It would be the exact opposite of her moods and beliefs. I guess for a Goth bride, wearing a white wedding dress would be bad luck. I can't say if a Goth bride suffers any back luck from wearing black. There are many superstitions surrounding weddings and brides. Traditional it isn't, that's for sure.

What about you? Do you find that black Gothic wedding gowns make the wedding day seem dark and sad? Does the bride look scary and evil dressed in black?

Gothic Wedding Gowns Are For The Unique Bride

There is no doubt that the Gothic culture isn't mainstream. Goths are different and very unique people. They prefer the dark side of life. Some of them, like in medieval times, are accused of being followers of satan or witches and warlocks.

There are many different styles of Gothic wedding gowns. Most of them are very beautiful in design as far as black dresses go. If they were not used as wedding dresses, most of them would make wonderful gowns for other formal occasions.

Wearing white bridal dresses is a surprisingly new tradition, anyway. Many brides wore black dresses on their wedding day in the late 1800's and up to the turn of the century. We humans do get used to our traditions pretty quickly.

Gothic wedding gowns in black  are for the bride who is not a mainstream kind of girl. She doesn't do what everybody else does and she doesn't get married in a white bridal gown because that is what society expects her to do. The Gothic wedding gown is black, deep purple, dark and very different. Gothic wedding fashion also includes Gothic accessories like shoes and jewelry. She will even have to plan some good Gothic wedding cake ideas. Here comes the bride, all dressed in black......

I gave it a backlink to on my wedding website. :) It is on the Budget Wedding page. That is due to lack of a better location on my site, but I liked the idea of a Gothic Wedding Dress so much I had to add it.

Interesting ... my daughter went through a Goth phase in her teens. Glad she's out of it.

Oh, my! Interesting article, but still, the bride in the pic above looks like a vampire or like she's ready to eat her future husband. If I showed up at my wedding in a wedding dress like that, my husband-to-be would turn into a runaway groom and I would scare the shi* out of my guests!
